Facilitator: Kris Swedin, Director SFCC Continuing Education
1. Welcome:
Thank you for joining us for the 2020 PROTEC program!
"Due to COVID-19, Santa Fe Community College is currently operating in an online capacity. Many classes and programs have transitioned to an online learning environment. " In accordance, the annual PROTEC accelerated training program has moved to an online format. The 12 training sessions will all be online and the internship opportunities that follow will also be online. As businesses, agencies, organizations, schools, staff, volunteers, teachers, students, and community members of all ages adjust to working and learning from home, it will require extra patience, flexibility, and resourcefulness. We thank you for navigating this transition together with us and look forward to supporting the success of your online learning and interning experience through the PROTEC program.
PROTEC is an accelerated learning program designed to quickly introduce you to a range of Tech-for-Business skills and platforms while also building your confidence and strengthening community connections and experience. There are many additional regular and continuing education courses and workshops offered by Santa Fe Community College that provide valuable opportunities for deeper study and skill-building in key areas, so be sure to stay connected for training program announcements and browse the Santa Fe Community College catalog for upcoming classes, as well as further paths of study and even certification program options.
In the meantime, the accelerated bootcamp format online will allow you to move at your own pace and is designed to provide an introduction that can accommodate a range of learners, including those who may have limited to no experience with a particular platform. If you encounter information that you are familiar with, remember it may be new to others and in such cases, we ask you to embrace the experience and assignments as an opportunity to review while looking for new learnings and new tips that could be helpful.
Meanwhile, if and when you encounter platforms or sessions that are difficult or confusing, we encourage you to persevere, AND please let us know. You can always email [email protected] with questions or requests for assistance, and we will be posting open office hours throughout the summer for one-to-one support. 2. A Message from Kris Swedin
SFCC Office of Continuing Education Director
I have undergone major transitions in my life and have changed careers several times since I entered the workforce in the 1970’s. Maybe I shouldn’t tell you that because you will be able to guess my age! I have been unemployed, have moved in with many roommates to be able to afford a place to live, and have roamed the country with only the belongings that could fit in a compact car on some of my employment adventures. I have learned a lot, challenged myself many times, cried buckets of tears when I didn’t know what to do next, but I have always landed on my feet again.
Only three and a half years ago I was unemployed, having stopped working for nearly three years to help my parents who needed live-in care. I was lucky to know many people who could help me get back into the workforce. Some of those people work with me here at Santa Fe Community College.
This is a tough time. I’m glad you are joining us in PROTEC to help yourself gain skills and improve your network of people who can help you figure out what you want to do next. I am here to help you, as are my colleagues who will work with you over the next few weeks. My most recent transition was to come to work as the Director of Continuing Education and Contract Training at Santa Fe Community College. Our programs include professional development classes like PROTEC, personal enrichment classes like cooking and Bridge, Energy Conservation training and health and safety training. These are noncredit classes, are usually short term, and help people gain skills. Many of our classes do lead to certifications, Certificates of completion, or digital badges as a way to acknowledge students’ accomplishments in successfully completing our classes.
I do have a personal life with my husband, Tom, and our dogs – two Brittanys – Kody and Mattie. I am spending a lot of time with them these days as I work from home. I’m interested in getting to know all of you and hope we can have some fun together!
Signed, Kris

From RoadTrip Nation:"It’s never too late to make a change for the better.""Meet three roadtrippers at a crossroads: Dana, a grandmother who’s worried the workforce has passed her by; Jeremy, a military veteran who’s eyeing a new career path; and Bernita, a mother of two who feels boxed in by her lack of a degree. They’ve all lived a lifetime’s worth of experiences—and now they’re ready for what’s next.
Follow their eye-opening road trip across America as they explore communities keeping ahead of the curve through alternative forms of education and training, and talk to people who are navigating life’s turns with tenacity—and without traditional four-year degrees. Although no one knows exactly what the future of work will look like, it’s clear that it will always hold opportunities for all—and it doesn’t have to leave anyone behind."
5. Assignment:
Video Reflections
Did you like these videos? Did either (or both) of them resonate for you? How did you feel about the messages of moving forward? Could you relate to any of the stories?
Please write a short response and tell how you feel. Was there any one moment in either video that really struck a chord for you? While watching was any particular feeling stirred up for you – especially given how life is right now during this time of global pandemic and isolation? What was the strongest moment for you in these stories? What’s your reaction? Hopeful? Uncertain? Excited? Something else?
Please send your thoughts in an email to: [email protected]
